BEGINNING OF ART --- 15,000-10,000BC
Strange Beginning of Artaround 15,000-10,000BC, prehistoric and primitive people began to create art.
Cave paintings then existed.
For example, Bison in Altamira, Spain
and Horse in Lascaux, France.
These cave paintings are accidentally
found by four boys.

these are all very old paintings, or even we cannot call them paintings. They do not have really meanings, and lack of delicate painting skills. It is the beginning of all arts, and it will develop.
For me, those 10,000 years old painting have small special values. We can know what they dream, how they live, and how they use tools through these paintings. These ancient art contained its own charm and express simply feeling of the primitive people. Art began to form.

More colors appear in the painting, and there are more details describe the story. Art did develop after those primary cave paintings. People must have done a lot of communication
although these paintings are so simple, but it have its own traits different from other periods and be distinguished for its specialty. Those mineral dots on caves, the big size drawings, and even the thoughts they arranged the position of the animals and people. These can all represent that period and connect the past and now.
Jomon Pottery--- 10,000BC to 300BC
people were hunter-gathers who lived off various nuts, grains, wildlife, and fruit growing across japan.

I love ceramics very much, making pots, creating sculptures, and enjoying the results. When I first saw these pictures, I was shocked: why those potteries can be so symmetric. Every time, when I make a mask, it is really hard to maintain the even shape of pots. How those ancient people did, how could they make even pots without fancy tools.
Moreover, I love the patterns Japanese use on pots: ropes. They really had a creative mind.

The Maoris of New Zealand
Artists there only have a primitive knowledge of their craft
However, they have truly amazing skill in carving.

Those carving subjects look a little bit odd, strange tongue, scared eyes, and angry face. I have seen lots of Maoris carvings, the general shape look same. They seem like come out from the same mode. What Maoris put most heed on is the details on the tongues, mouth, and eye shallows. For some carvings other than those faces, Maoris had elegant style of carvings. Maybe they are for the ceilings, beds, or doors.
Many carvings are stored at Auckland museum. For me, the carvings are really strange because most of them have big tongues with complex patterns on it. Most shaped like monsters.
African art, Mask--- 500 B.C- 500A.D.

it is a famous art, the women with a loyal face, colorful and respectful. it is the more modern african sculpture because of its colorthey will give face different looks
artists like to built face in a geometrical way
They will use a lot of patterns, line, dots
bold colors are what masks must have
mask dance is popular in ceremony
there are human, animal, and god masks
Also, african artists have good carving skills

Dogon is a place known for african mask and mask dance. It is not that developed, but full of mystery. There are tons of masks there, all for different events. Professional mask making men all lived a little bit away from the town because they cannot be seen by women and children. In the ancient, people use chicken and sheep blood on the mask, and it is the sacrifice. More and more masks come out, but less styles of masks exist, they are in the way of extinction. The mask dance is crazy, and skillful. I really want to see once.
Stonehenge--- 5000 years ago
it is built in south England, and it is started 5000 years ago.
They used blue stones and Sarcens(big stone). The weight range is form 4 tons to 25 tons. Most of stones are from 30 miles and 156 miles away
It was also a large Neolithic burial site in Britain
4600 years ago, there are dozens of bluestones, which are the small ones; later, around 4400 years ago, some grander replace it. till 4300 years ago, major construction art stonehenge was finished, there are two additional bluestone rings, one inside the horseshoe and another between the horseshoe and the outer layer of interconnected sarsen stones.

For me, it is a magic to carry such big stones and group them into a specific trend and shape. Around the stones, there are grasses, how can they not destroy the grass, and carry the stones.
easter island---1250 to 1500AD
easter island is a small hilly and treeless island of volcanic origin
2200 miles off the coast of Chile
easter island is 63 square miles and has 3 extinct volcanoes
288 stood upon massive stone platforms, 250 of these are half miles away
another 600 were caved from the hard stone of the RANO RARAKU VOLCANO
average height is 14 feet, 6 inches tall and weights 14 tons
some large ones are 33 feet and weighted more than 80 tons
estimated that 50-150 people were needed to drag them across the countryside on sleds
the statues may have been used for religious purposes
statues are believed to have been carved between 1250 to 1500AD

Art for Eternity
Around 3000 B.C, Egyptian history began to appear
The most famous thing is Pyramids
It was considered the inspiration of modern art
Pyramids is used to be the tomb, storing the spirit of the king and make him the better after life.
I think it is really a mysterious country. Hoping that I will have the chance to go into the pyramids. Their art is not considered beautiful because their body proportion looks strange (face and body facing the different direction), However, their sculptures and paintings really have their own styles and stories.

The Ancient Egypt is a wonderful country, with great paintings, specific sculptures, and powerful architects. Their paintings have their own styles, clear body outlines, awkward angles of people, bright colors, fancy decorations around neck and on head.
I want to explore in those huge pyramids.

Some pyramids are fancy inside, with many rooms, decorated walls, rooms, and tombs. Those pyramids are for the after life of the king and queen. Many wall paintings inside those huge pyramids are the guide for the kings to go to the after life.
Some pyramids had no tombs and decorated subjects inside the pyramids. My theories for this is that people using pyramid as the communicating tool and sending signal from pyramids. The pyramids will produce a lot of electricity on specific time of the year, and pictures of light bulbs were found in the wall paintings, how interesting it is.
I think Egyptians depend on aliens building the pyramids, thus, they needed to use pyramids to contact with them, the aliens.

Egyptian art is closely related to Greece art. Egyptian art had great impact on Greece, natural body, and huge proportion. More Greece sculptures are made in the ceremonies. Egyptian sculptures like to use animal elements into human body.
The earliest region where culture began, mesopotamia. A place between two rivers. Culture usually begins at the river place.
Sculptures and paintings there are more primitive than the ancient Egyptian art. Less decorative, less clear figure outline, and no strict organization order.

GReek art --- 7 th - 5 th b.c.
In my opinion, greek art and greek culture was developing along with the wars. Spartan war, Trojan war made the communication of people. Moreover, the destruction of old buildings, egyptian style buildings, impels the new greek art.
Athen is a great nation, wealthy, thriving, and free. Their leader led people develop the architecture, culture, mythology, psychology. War brings disaster and also bring new stuff.

greek MYCOLOGY
Along with the development of greek art, more natural movements, muscles, facial expressions. Greek had more stories coming out, about gods. Gods are powerful, strong, and are over normal people.
The greeks liked to fight, liked power, and was eager to dream those dreams. I believe that those gods are what people dream of and also are their goals of life.
the belief of gods help them concentrate, the people, the group, and the nation.
The following pictures are what Ancient greeks thought of gods.

Parthenon
It was instructed by Phidias, took about nine years to built it, using tons of gold, marbles, and gold.
Due to the persian war, it was destroyed.
From the 20 century, the reconstruction work began, and it last about 30 years.
I think it may take another 30 years or even more time to rebuilt the whole parthenon, interior and exterior.
Special geography provides nations more chances to fight, and the same, art becomes more thriving.

Roman art is closely related to Greek art. Both of these two cultures located in a nearby region, southern Europe, coasted with Mediterranean Sea. As a later and newer period, Roman art followed many concepts that Greek art did. Similar paintings, similar sculptures, similar architectures, and similar fresco. The only difference is that Romans used tons of arches for their architects.
As many people know, Roma had great transportation system, not because they have fancy transportation tools, but for its roads. Roads in Roman period were very famous as they could reach many places, to China, to Italy, to Middle East. It turns into a symbol of Roman. Before, I did not know why people said Roman has great roads, simply covering with small rocks; however, now, I know the reason: they connect nations to nations. They are not simply roads any more, they are the roads connected humans, countries, cultures.
Other than Roads in Roma, aqueducts are as famous as roads in Roman. It is the water transportation system in the mid time in Roman. To avoid dirty water, polluted from agriculture and factories, Romans built a tunnel high in the air. Clean water can be sent directly from the original source to citizens' houses. It is a brilliant idea for those Romans and for me. It is impossible for me to think of such a way. Instead of thinking about changing the way of transporting, I may put more effort on how to clean the polluted water.
Colosseum, the most famous Roman building.
It is a utilitarian structure, with three stories of arches
in front of these arches,
Roman architects put a kind of greek screen
ground floor- doric style
second story- Ionic
Third and the half forth- Corinthian
Triumphal arch and Colosseum are the symbol of Roman art
Greek art has formed a identical unit.

They were caught to be trained at the age of six or seven. During the training, no food, no warm clothes, but only harsh environment. The reason why they conquered so many lands is that they have strong soldiers.
Those soldiers are ready to fight, all the time.

Roman empire was thriving in the first 5 centuries. its region has reached the northern Africa, western Europe, and eastern Asia. Conquering is the mission for most of Roman men. War often happened in Roman. I think there is no need to conquer such a big region, but the conquering history did blend culture together and spread Roman art. War has some benefits for art's development.
In churches, instead of big wall paintings, Romans like to used colored glasses to make up a drawing. The picture I showed above is an example of that kind of painting. Although it looks rigid and not detailed, but it is very different and has its own style. Those colored small pieces can also be made by minerals.
Roman art is not only the copy of Greek art. It developed by itself, arches, decorated patterns, and fancy transportation systems. It make human bodies more real and true to our eyes. Greek influenced Roman art, but to me, Roman art influenced the whole world.

It is in Turkey, and the meaning of it in Greek is holy wisdom
Total is 56 meters high and the dome is 31 meters.
The reason why people said it is incredible is because the time built it spent only five years, and it still stood here today.
I love this building because it looks like a big castle, and it look so different from others.

The interior of islamic architecture is wonderful. I use wonderful to describe how the decoration is because it is just too great. Gold is the main material in that building. I wonder how much money and how much effort people devoted to that building.
For me, I will put all my effort to what I love, and the same to them. They must treat that build divinely.

it was built in 1400s covered about 700 acres.

Mogao Caves- form with 492 temples
- built in caves, Dunhuang
- the first caves were dug out in 366 CE
- it contains so many arts and sculptures about buddhism
Chinese culture is not only Chinese culture that simple. It includes many elements, western, eastern, and typical Chinese. I believe it took more than even 20 years to complete it because it includes many cravings on stones in a relatively high hill. It was considered the cultural treasure in China, and I am totally agree with that.
We have to protect these kinds of architecture, art to continue our traditional culture. It is the process and we are not ought to destroy it.

- built during 1131-1162.
- The garden contains 48 buildings with 101 tablets
mostly brick walls and wooden decorations.
- Buildings are surrounded by pounds.
My favorite kind of Chinese architecture is the Jiangnan Style. Most of it have white walls and black bricks, not fancy, not fabulous. It ceilings adapted thousands years to fit in Chinese southern climate. Chinese southern art is like a drawing, requiring people to taste it.

Chinese art is famous now and before. The theory of Chinese painting is about the spirit of objects. Different from oil paintings or sketches, Chinese drawings used special pigments and special brushes. The left picture only has the color black, but we can definitely tell that it is the bamboo and bamboo leaves.

Middle ages --- Cathedral, from 5th- 16th century
High peek, 1000-1300s
I love the interior in a cathedral. it looks more luxury than the palace. There are tons of carvings and paintings in a cathedral, like the Mogao cave in China, a cathedral is like a huge museum about a specific time period in a specific location.
Cathedral was considered as God’s house on earth, and its dimension of cathedral is significant south west of Paris. The main material is stone. During the construction, priests learnt greek and roman knowledgeuse numbers in bible. The divine demension is 50 roman feet in the central square—— god save us from flood144 roman feet. 30 royal feet for each level.
It is the window in a cathedral. Windows became one part of art in Christian cathedral. They use pigments such as metals and mix it into glass. I do not consider it is an art from dark ages because the face and proportion of that woman and her child show the progress of the art development.
It is so nice to have those decorated windows in cathedral.

It is the drawing in Medieval time. Comparing to others, the modern art and renaissance art, the proportion of it is very strange. They use very dull colors, and I cannot describe the feeling of this painting. Nothing seems to be described in that painting. The medieval periods art is not considered bad or down warded, they have its own style.
renaissance - 14th to 17th century
The three people above is the great artist in the renaissance period. Da Vinchi, Michelangelo, and Donatello.
Da Vinchi is known for his Mona Lisa. He is the central character in Renaissance periods. Exploring the nature and believe no gods.
Michelangelo is the great architect in that period, and he is loved by Popes in Florence. His work is Florence Cathedral, the wall paintings, and the sculptures of Popes.
Donatello is the transition between Gothic art and Renaissance art. His sculpture was full of emotion and real.

It is different from the normal cathedral, not following the normal construction method, like the tradition Catholic way. It is more modern and stylish.
I love this cathedral not because the great dorm, but the patterns of bricks when construct it. The dome is not straight circular any more, but more intend to be a cylinder.
Its difference made it a symbol of Florence, the symbol of Renaissance.

Da Vinchi, as the leader of southern florence style, using the math to figure the drawing. Face of Mona Lisa shows the great balance and the beauty. Her face follows the golden ratio.
It is impossible for me to draw anything like this, the shallow and the outline is so real to the nature.

A great success in Da Vinchi's work. This sculpture shoes the great proportion of human body and human. No strict for human body, all very natural.
It is just like a photograph in brown and white for me. Renaissance is the period of showing truth to the rest of the world.

It is one of the works from Donatello. - characterized his figures as individuals
- he made the first bronze sculpture
- invented shallow relief technique
- he used a powerful realism enables the distinct look of his statues
- use expressive ugliness to give the statue a life of its own
I think the central idea of Renaissance is to reveal the truth but not hide the ugliness.

He was much younger than Michelangelo and Leonardo.
Working from his teacher when he was young and attain most of the painting techniques from there.

I like this painting pretty much for its impression left, old, sunset, and a sense of relax. The change of color is not dramatic, so the picture looks real.

Johan Laurentz Jensen
1800-1856
Another very classic painting
It is the description of the flowers, true proportion and the close to nature colors
Those flowers look like coming out from the photos.
Detail of use of color provides life to those flowers.

There is no specific artist name on the painting
but there is a series of paintings called still life
Although they are just on the paper, they look alive to us.
The shine of the glass and the durt on the grapes show how much patience and effort the painter devoted to this painting.
It is different from the classic renaissance because those classic paintings look like that they are on the wall or a flat surface, but flemish paintings are not.

MANNERIST PAINTING
After high Renaissance
It is not the old painting from those famous artist, but this painting reveals the true spirit of Mannerist painting, awkward and without the classical beauty.
The suffering face and the evil face in the left. All those three people's facial impression is twisting and suffering, no peace, ease, or beauty at all

Brozino Venus
1540-1550
It is a really classical artwork, the beautiful human body proportions, the use of colors and whole organization of the painting.
However, there are four strange parts on this image, the right up corner's angry man, the right-bottom side's deathly looked couples, and the suffering and screaming man in the left, and the body of the cupiter
This painting is strange.

Hercules
Deilanira and Nessus
1580-85
This painting looks classical overall, but when we look closer into the painting, the meaning of it is not as classical as the first impression left to us
I think it is strange, and I do not like the art work that lack of classical elements but is a classical art.
It just looks strange to me
The proportion of this painting is so off, and the bottom left corner is strange, too.

This one combing withe fruit and makes a human face
looks strange but is the true symbolized artwork of Mannerism.
I like this artwork because I think the use of fruits is brilliant
Colors of this image although a little bit dull, but it is another feature to prove its own style

Peter Paul Rubens
1577-1640
he was consider the most successful artist in the 17th century
Rubens liked to paint from a high point, and also can catch the transition of light.
This small girl is described very into detail, her hair, and his face.
He did all the details of that little girl, although it is like the renaissance art, it still have some differences from those.
The girl is more lively than those gothic characters.

A portion from the painting of Rubens
This part is the very classical part that can describe the style of Rubens, painting from the high point, and the great transition of light.
As a great artist influenced greatly by Renaissance, the details in his painting are described closely and specifically.
His painting looks so real and colorful, even more vivid than the photograph.

Quite different from his normal style, this painting looks more humble.
Although the painting looks much more simple, the quality of cotton on the woman's shoulder and the light reflect on her hair show the style of Diego.
This color of this woman looks much lighter than the previous two, and the change of light is more obvious.

A self portrait
the whole image comes out from the painting
the face of him is much brighter than the background.
The hair of his is amazing, I believe those hairs on the painting are even much thinner than his on his body.

He is good at describing the light and shallow.
This painting shows the sympathy of the old man
the one spot of his right eye shows his emotion.
No rigid rules for how to paint the human's face.
The wrinkled skin of this old man is showed delicately.

This painting was paint in the high floor and was describing a outdoor view, like the normal impressionism painting. Trees are in a pretty good shape, but the building behind the trees are blurry and not clear in outlines.
The same for those people walking in the street, not detailed described, and some of them are just black dots.

The flag may be seen behind the glass, and the flag is not clearly outlined or we can say that the outline of flag is off.
However, it is what is going to be like if we see something behind the glass, which covered by thick rain.
People are not even in shape, they are black lines.

We could say it is a modern product, but the artist intend to do some pieces of colors and leave a few brush strokes.

Before looking at the artist, we can guess who is artist by looking at the painting only. Van Gogh like to put more attention to the most identified part of the human, maybe the nose, eyes, or the mouth.
The brush stroke are not clear, but they are still existing in the painting.

I like the feeling of this painting, peaceful and comfortable. The woman has no clear outlines on her face, and this is the point why the whole painting will give us a tranquil sense. The technique Pissarro used is similar to pointlism. He used bigger dots instead of those tiny dots.
Changes of light are described greatly on this painting.
